From the director of several Fast and the Furious movies, Justin Lin’s first film is an impressive indie coming of age crime story with tragically rare representation. Between Joy Luck Club and Crazy Rich Asians, Eastern Promises presents perhaps the only American film about disenfranchised suburban Asian-American youth. Existentially restless by fulfilling the stereotype of the smart Asian student, Ben and his friends are seduced into crime. Eventually him and his buddies get into that escalated good crime stuff and we got ourselves an early 2000s flick that sits there with GO, Swingers, and Guy Ritchie movies. If anything, come witness the introduction of the same character from the Fast and The Furious series, Han, the hunky cool Korean guy always munchin on snacks to replace his smoking habit which is heavily featured in Better luck Tomorrow.
