The Neon Dreams Summer of ’90s continues with The Wachowski’s 1996 debut feature, BOUND. Three years before changing cinema forever with a little film called THE MATRIX, the sibling filmmaking duo Lily and Lana Wachowski (aka ”Wachowski Starship”) steamed up screens (and computer monitors if you are of a certain age) across the nation with a slick, stylish, and oh-so sexy lesbian crime thriller that would have made Alfred Hitchcock blush.
Violet (Jennifer Tilly), a closeted lesbian prostitute and mob moll, longs to escape her relationship with money-launderer Caesar (Joe Pantoliano). When she meets ex-con Corky (Gina Gershon) hired to renovate the next-door apartment, an intense sexual bond is sparked and the two women hatch a scheme to steal $2 million of Mafia money.
The fact that the Wachowski’s manage to masterfully subvert the male gaze that typically comes with erotic thrillers of its era seems far less surprising now than it did when first released. As such, BOUND is a gloriously female-powered shocker and an essential entry into the queer cinema cannon that promises to leave you gripping your armrest from start to finish.
This screening and others are film made possible thanks to our wonderful sponsor Hollywood Suite. As always this will be a fully licensed event featuring a fabulous on-screen pre-show. Be sure to arrive early!
