Retropath: XANADU

This summer Retropath! takes you back to 1980, serving up all the disco and dancing you can handle! See Cannon’s The Apple (1980) this June, the Village People in Can’t Stop the Music (1980) this July, and Olivia Newton-John singing ELO in Xanadu (1980) this August!

XANADU follows Sonny (Michael Beck), a heavy-hearted artist who is in need of some inspiration. He meets former bandleader Danny McGuire (Gene Kelly in his last big screen role!), and the elusive and beautiful Kira (Olivia Newton-John), and together they conspire to open a roller disco called Xanadu. As much glitz, glitter and glamour as one can feasibly imagine resides inside those gilded doors, set to the music of the Electric Light Orchestra.

In spite of being one of the most notorious flops ever, this film is a sheer delight from beginning to end. It employs such an unbelievable lightness and campiness that it is impossible to watch without smiling, and is at times genuinely hilarious. Want bright colours, catchy tunes, funny dialogue and cheesy dance numbers? XANADU has it covered.

Our screenings would be nothing without our freaky sponsors, The Beguiling and Eyesore Cinema!
