The second screening in the Sanghum Film Series takes you to the lush hillsides of India’s Southwestern state, Kerala!
Dileesh Pothan’s directorial debut Maheshinte Prathikaaram (Mahesh’s Revenge) was released to critical acclaim, receiving awards for Best Original Screenplay and Best Feature in Malayalam at the 64th National Film Awards. The film takes a sideways glance onto the traditional revenge-saga formula, stripping back the melodrama and hard-hitting action expected of a story of “the photographer who wanted revenge.” Dileesh Pothan uses the persistence of monsoon rains and overwhelming coastal landscape to bring to light the subtleties of social etiquette and fraternity, and show how these bonds function within the unspoken hierarchies of Mahesh’s rural farming village. This film is striking and funny, reclining comfortably somewhere between romance, comedy, and revenge-drama.
“In its frankness, its directness and almost cliche-free flourishes, Maheshinte Prathikaaram becomes a rare movie experience that is also incredibly generous — both to the world it is set in and to the world it is made for.”
