Our second screening in Up All Night—our tribute to cinematic one-nighters—BEFORE SUNRISE is inarguably one of the most romantic, wistful films of all time. See over one night, American tourist Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Parisian student Celine (Julie Delpy) meet on a train journeying to Vienna. Smitten with each other, they decide to spend the evening and wee hours of the AM wandering the city, killing time before Jesse’s journey back to America. Waxing poetic on a variety of Gen X issues, they fall for each other with the understanding that their romance expires with the rising of the sun. Linklater’s landmark romance spawned a beloved trilogy that matures along with its audience. BEFORE SUNRISE is simply one of the most romantic films ever made—a testament to Delpy and Hawke’s incomparable chemistry.
