World Contact Day: COMMUNION

World Contact Day was first declared in March 1953 by the International Flying Saucer Bureau (IFSB), as a day on which all IFSB members would attempt to send a telepathic message into space. IFSB members focused on the following message during 1953:

Calling occupants of interplanetary craft! Calling occupants of interplanetary craft that have been observing our planet EARTH. We of IFSB wish to make contact with you. We are your friends, and would like you to make an appearance here on EARTH. Your presence before us will be welcomed with the utmost friendship. We will do all in our power to promote mutual understanding between your people and the people of EARTH. Please come in peace and help us in our EARTHLY problems. Give us some sign that you have received our message. Be responsible for creating a miracle here on our planet to wake up the ignorant ones to reality. Let us hear from you. We are your friends.

To celebrate and have a little fun this World Contact Day, The Royal Cinema is lovingly presenting two alien abduction flicks! Fire in the Sky (1993), chronicling the abduction of Travis Walton, and the absolutely baffling Communion (1989), following the multiple encounters with UFOs and Whitley Strieber.

Our neighborhood pals Sellers & Newel will be in the lobby selling UFO books before the screenings!

COMMUNION (1989) – 9:30 PM

“From the international best-seller, comes COMMUNION, the gripping and compelling story of a novelist whose recurring nightmares of alien encounters prove to be a terrible reality. Christopher Walken portrays Whitley Strieber’s adventures into the unknown as he struggled to keep himself from falling over the edge of reality. A powerful true story that explores the unknown.” (Alamo Drafthouse)

In spite of some of the (sometimes hilarious) creative liberties taken in Communion specifically, these screenings are presented with respect, as a fun and light dive into the esoteric. Let’s laugh at Christopher Walken dancing with aliens, but let’s not make fun of people. As the IFSB says, we are your friends!
